Help a San Diego wheelchair basketball team get to Chicago

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) - The San Diego Hammer's wheelchair basketball team is on fire. In fact, they have played so well they were invited to the 2019 NWBA National Varsity tournament in Chicago, Illinois.

There is only one problem - getting 12 players and multiple coaches halfway across the country is not cheap. The players and coaches on the San Diego Hammers are looking to raise over $6,000 in time to make it to the tournament which takes place March 29-31.

If you want to help, it is as easy as donating to their GoFundMe campaign

Coach DeShjhon Mitchell along with Noelle, Danny and Michelle from the team stopped Morning Extra by to shoot some hoops and to talk about how special it would be to play for a championship in Chicago.

Register here to join the team or to be a volunteer.

The Varsity San Diego Hammer's GoFundMe video appears below.

Editor's Note: A previous version of this story said the Hammers were San Diego's only wheelchair basketball team. This is incorrect and the story has been updated to show this.
