SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) – A 4-year-old boy suffered major injuries early Tuesday when he was hit by a pickup truck as he was wandering alone on an offramp from Interstate-15 in City Heights.

The crash was reported shortly after midnight near the University Avenue offramp from southbound I-15, California Highway Patrol Officer Tommy Doerr said.

The 29-year-old man behind the wheel of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado, who is a UC San Diego student, said he saw the boy walking in the lanes as he was driving up the offramp in the rain.

The driver told told authorities he barely saw the boy on his truck's passenger side. The driver said he thought  they boy was a "ghost in a scary movie," and he quickly jerked his truck to the left - narrowly clipping the boy with the plastic of his headlight.

The impact broke the headlight of the truck and knocked the boy down.

The driver immediately tried to help the boy and another motorist stopped and called 911.

"He did everything he could. He stopped. He did what he had to do. He stopped and contacted us," said a CHP officer.

Medics arrived and put the child on a backboard with a neck brace. The boy was conscious and crying, but he did show signs of the impact as he had a bloody forehead.

The boy was taken to Rady Children's Hospital with major injuries, Doerr said. His condition remains unknown. CHP said the boy's mother showed up at the hospital after filing a missing child report.

The driver remained at the scene. Intoxication is not believed to be a factor in the accident, the officer said. He told authorities he was leaving campus and heading home and to a McDonald's in City Heights at the time of accident.
