Stroke: Prevention, Warning Signs and Recovery

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) - Did you know that almost 900,000 people a year have a stroke and almost 150,000 of those die from their strokes?

A stroke occurs when an artery to the brain bursts or becomes clogged, which reduces or interrupts the blood flow to a part of the brain.

Some common symptoms of a stroke include:

•        Numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
•        Confusion or trouble speaking
•        Trouble seeing with one or both eyes
•        Issues with walking, experiencing dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
•        Severe headache with no known cause

Although strokes are common, they are very much preventable. Things like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and excessive alcohol consumption can lead to strokes.

Sharp HealthCare is putting on a free health workshop that will be all about preventing strokes. The free event will be held at the Logan Heights Library  on Friday, March 15 from 2-3 p.m. To register to attend, visit their website or call call 1-800-82-SHARP (1-800-827-4277).

Doctor Madjid Keyvani and doctor Ryan Viets joined Morning Extra to talk about how prominent strokes are in America and what you can do to lower your risk.
