SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) - U.S. Customs and Border Protection conducted a large-scale operational readiness exercise Thursday that lasted about 10 minutes at the San Ysidro port of entry.

During the exercise, CBP were dressed in riot gear, released smoke bombs and formed a line across the port of entry's traffic lanes which temporarily delayed traffic.

Back in December, the CBP closed all lanes from Mexico into the U.S. to conduct a similar operational readiness exercise at the Tecate Port of Entry.

CBP say they are continually assessing the capabilities of their facilities and continue to make necessary preparations to ensure the facilitation of lawful trade and travel. They say their highest priority is the safety and security of the American people, the traveling public, CBP personnel and the communities in which they serve.

San Ysidro is the border’s busiest crossing, with over 100,000 people entering the U.S. every day.
