SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A power outage left much of downtown San Diego and surrounding areas without electrical service for several hours Friday.
The blackout began about 11:15 a.m., initially affecting roughly 8,500 San Diego Gas & Electric customers in the urban core of the city and in nearby Balboa Park and Golden Hill, the utility company reported.
Among the places left without power were San Diego police headquarters at 14th and Broadway, the B Street offices of the San Diego Union-Tribune and San Diego City College, which canceled classes at its Park Boulevard campus for the remainder of the day due to the problem.
By 12:45 p.m., utility crews had restored power to roughly half of the affected customers, according to SDG&E public affairs.
A little more than an hour later, all but 279 were back on line. Service was expected to be restored to those remaining customers -- all of them in downtown San Diego -- by 10 p.m., the utility company advised.
The cause of the outage remained under investigation in the late afternoon, SDG&E spokesman Wes Jones said.
