District 4: Dumanis and Fletcher square off during debate

SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) – Former district attorney Bonnie Dumanis and former state assemblyman Nathan Fletcher on Thursday night squared off in a face-to-face debate as the race for a key County of Board of Supervisors seat enters the home stretch.

With less than 30 days until Election Day, Dumanis and Fletcher squared off in a forum in front of East Village voters – both hoping to earn votes for the District 4 County Supervisor seat.

The two candidates were asked about a number of topics that concern San Diego voters like the hepatitis A outbreak, treating mental health and the housing crisis.

In regards to the housing crisis, Dumanis believes it starts by easing regulations on developers. “If we are going to get more housing and more housing more quickly, we need to make sure we are streamlining the process and cutting the red tape.”

Meanwhile, Fletcher believes the county can be more hands on to make the regulations work. “We need to take action now, but it should start with a goal. We should have a number of housing units that we think need to be built in the region. The county should know what its share of the load is and then that bureaucracy drives the county to meet that goal.”

Dumanis and Fletcher also clashed on expanding services for the homeless.

Fletcher believes more neighborhoods should pitch in. “We are all in this boat together and that is where Clairemont is going to step up and Kensington is going to step up and La Jolla is going to step up, and Poway is going to have to step up.”

Dumanis, on the other hand, proposed moving the existing services outside of downtown. “I would relocate that [homeless services] – some of them. That is why the homeless gravitate here because the services are here.”
