"All American" set to premier Wednesday on the CW

SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) – The CW fall lineup includes a new football drama that hopes to score a touchdown with fans.

“All American” is based on the real life story of former NFL player Spencer Paysinger, who won Super Bowl 46 with the New York Giants.

The CW’s newest drama will follow the life of rising high school football star Spencer James – who gets a chance to leave the gang violence and poverty of South Crenshaw High School.

British actor Daniel Ezra will play the lead and Taye Diggs will play Coach Billy Baker.

Diggs’ character is an amalgamation of those who helped guide the pro-football player on his way to success.

“It’s been so amazing having Spencer here because he is no way overbearing. Whenever we have a question about sports or storyline, he is right there,” said Diggs.

Paysinger said remembers the troubling tale of two cities. “Growing up I never felt like I fit into the South Central culture for the most part. On that side, I am dealing with gangs and drugs and violence. Then, when I get to Beverly Hills, I am dealing with affluence,” he said.

The challenging journey ultimately took him from the streets of South Central Los Angeles to the Super Bowl.

The show is hoping to inspire others to pursue their passion.

“All American” premiers Wednesday at 9 p.m. on the CW San Diego.

News 8's Marcella Lee reveals some behind the scenes details about many of the locations viewers will see in the show.
