Massive geyser erupts in University City, spews rocks into the air

SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) - Repairs were underway Monday on a 42-inch diameter water transmission line that ruptured in University City.

The break on Greenwich Drive near Nobel Drive was reported around 10:30 p.m. Sunday just west of Interstate 805, city spokesman Arian Collins said.

Water rushed onto I-805 and into a nearby business parking lot, causing concerns about surrounding gas lines.

SDG&E was able to turn the water off around 4:30 a.m. Monday, but it took six hours due to the pressure of the geyser that catapulted large rocks into the air, landing on a car in a nearby parking lot.

The pipe has since been shut down, and no area homes or businesses were without running water, Collins said.

It was not immediately known how long it would take to repair the line, according to Collins.
