SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - It's not something you typically see on the birthday wish list of a 10-year-old girl. But for Lyann, whose birthday is Tuesday, November 1, finding a forever home would be the best gift she could receive.
Lyann has spent half her life in foster care and is hoping a new decade will bring her a new family.
It's been about a year and a half since I first met Lyann and she is still waiting to find a forever home.
But fortunately for Lyann, she has had her Court Appointed Special Advocate, or CASA, by her side to help pick up the pieces when she's down and map out the often challenging journey in the foster care system.
“She's a blast to be with she's fun, she's funny, she's engaging, she connects really quickly with people,” said Marianne Elam, Lyann’s CASA.
Elam still remembers the day she met Lyann, 18 months ago, and was immediately impressed by the conversation Lyann sparked in the car on the way to the zoo.
“She came up with this silly little word game for us to play and I still smile when I think about that, because I should have been the one to be breaking the ice with her, but instead she was the one that did it. And she's just that way,” said Elam.
Lyann is in fifth grade and is learning decimals and is enjoying school. But she would love nothing more than a parent or two to help her with homework.
In her free time, Lyann loves to tumble.
“I'm really good at gymnastics. I can do the splits,” Lyann added. “I can do a cartwheel and a round off.”
“I would really like to see her get involved in gymnastics, dance and sports because she's incredibly coordinated. And I feel she really has that gift and if she can develop that that's something she can continue to do through middle school and high school and even college,” continued Elam.
Marianne and Lyann have spent a lot of time together the past year and half.
“I think her strongest attribute is her perseverance and determination. I have seen her try and again and again to accomplish something until she can master it, she just doesn't give up.” Elam said.
The sky's the limit for Lyann who just needs a forever home.
“I see so much potential in her and that's why I'm so eager for her to find the right family, because I do feel like with the right match, with the right people, she can do anything,” noted Elam.
