EarthFair and Avocado Festival: Two of San Diego's largest festivals

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two of San Diego County's largest annual festivals were held Sunday -- the EarthFair in Balboa Park and the Avocado Festival in Fallbrook.

According to organizer San Diego Earthworks, 50,000 to 60,000 people were expected to attend the 27th annual EarthFair, beginning at 10 a.m.

Because of the large crowd, attendees were encouraged to take the San Diego Trolley's stop near City College, and walk up Park Boulevard. A free shuttle ran from Park Boulevard and Russ Street from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

More than 300 exhibitors were on hand, along with children's activities and entertainment.

The 30th annual Fallbrook Avocado Festival started at 9 a.m. and included contests, recipes exhibitors and entertainment along Main Street in the downtown village area.

The annual San Diego County Crop Report lists avocados as the region's fourth most valuable crop in 2014 at more than $154 million. However, the fruit is water intensive, and avocado production has been hurt by the drought, according to the county Farm Bureau.

In 2010, the value of avocados grown in San Diego County was nearly $198 million.
